What is a thyroid nodule and why does it form?

Does every nodule need surgery?

Can a benign nodule turn into cancer?

Transformation is uncommon; cancer usually develops de novo. That is why nodules with suspicious ultrasound features are biopsied; confirmed cancer is treated with thyroid cancer surgery.

Depending on TI-RADS category, ultrasound every 6-12 months (or longer). Significant growth or new suspicious features trigger biopsy.

Do nodules cause symptoms?

Small nodules are usually silent. Large nodules can cause neck fullness, swallowing discomfort or voice change.

What is a goiter? Simple vs. multinodular?

Goiter means a diffusely enlarged thyroid. Without nodules it is 'simple'; with several nodules it is 'multinodular'. Both can be benign or malignant, and are evaluated the same way.

Does goiter always need surgery?

No. If thyroid function is normal and there are no compression symptoms, most goiters are observed. Compression, cosmetic concern, hyperthyroidism or suspicious nodules are indications for thyroid surgery.

How is toxic (hyperfunctioning) goiter treated?

Hormone excess is first controlled with medication, then either radioactive iodine or surgery is chosen based on size, patient preference and comorbidity.

You return to normal activity the same day. Mild tenderness and rarely a small bruise are possible.

Lobectomy removes one lobe; total thyroidectomy removes the entire gland. The choice depends on nodule features, biopsy result and clinical context.

What is intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) and does it help?

Is thyroid hormone medication lifelong after total thyroidectomy?

Why is calcium checked after parathyroid or total thyroid surgery?
