Intraoperative Nerve Monitoring

Intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) is a system that tracks the recurrent laryngeal nerve — the nerve to the voice box — in real time during thyroid surgery, helping protect the voice.

Short Answer

IONM does not replace careful anatomical dissection, but it adds an objective safety layer and helps the surgeon confirm nerve function step by step during the operation.

What IONM Does

A special endotracheal tube picks up signals from the vocal cord muscles. The surgeon can confirm that the recurrent laryngeal nerve is intact before, during and after the critical part of the operation.

Treatment Options

  • IONM is used routinely in our thyroid surgery practice

When Is Surgery Considered?

  • All total thyroidectomies
  • Reoperative neck surgery
  • Large goiters and retrosternal disease
  • Cancer with extrathyroidal extension

Surgical Methods

  • Continuous and intermittent IONM techniques
  • Parathyroid mapping by visual identification and tissue characteristics

Preoperative Preparation

  • Standard thyroid surgery preparation
  • Anaesthesia team uses the dedicated tube

Postoperative Follow-up

  • Voice review at the first visit
  • ENT review if any abnormal signal was noted

Risks and Safe Surgery

  • IONM is non-invasive; it adds safety rather than risk

Process in Antalya

IONM is part of the standard thyroid surgery setup in Antalya for our patients; you do not need to organise anything in advance.

When to Seek Urgent Care

  • Severe persistent hoarseness after surgery

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It significantly reduces the risk of permanent nerve injury but cannot eliminate it.

Hello, I would like to request a pre-evaluation for thyroid/goiter/thyroid nodule. I can share my ultrasound, biopsy and blood test results.
